Here I have uploaded a process of a illustration for my students at San Diego City College...take a look!

image

Okay here is the first thing first! get the sketch done and ready to go!!

image

in your sketch define the shadows and lights, so you dont have to be figuring out what should be shadow and light meanwhile you are painting...resolve all compositional, value, line in the sketch phase

image

get your stuff ready to go!

image

set your paints, paint tray, hair dryer to dry paint

here is a tour of the junk in my studio, I always get asked how is my workplace!!!well now you will findout!!!

image

crap everywhere!

image

image

cant a real studio without having a mexican wrestling mask on hand and some sandals at hand!

image

Okay back to the process!get your sketch and put it somewhere where you can see it!remember your sketch is your blue print or plan of attack and more specifically your guide to tell what to do first!I usually stick up on the wall in front of me!

image

I decided to start off witht he red first! It dosent matter what you start off with first, just keep in mind that it will be easier to figure out if you start with the black, white and gray first and then add the red at the end!!

I start off with the lowest value of red first and then build up from the lightest to darkets at the end!

image

I keep it going until I pretty much cover the whole red in medium lights, the darkest daks go at the end when I have already filled in the rest of the medium light colors, so it is easier to figure out and make the illustration one whole piece

image

I block in some shapes in white over my white paper

Okay, I know that there is something missing int he process, the gray process is missing!!sorry I got carried away painting this that I forgot to document that part!!but no worries I will upload something else here.

This is a good exmaple of the light to dark technique! you can see it here!!!

the arrow is signaling the white of the paper!!no paint is added here

image

the arrow is pointing at the lowest shade of gray, this is the first layer of color that deliniates the images, it should be a soft light color, just enought aht you can see your drawing in the light color grey

image

the arrow is pointing at the midgrey! and this color goes nest to the light grey color, you need to be aware that the two colors should be overlaping each other but no blocking each other.

image

now the dark grey at the very end!!

here are some more exmaples of the black, grey and white!Remember the project objective is to:

1: cool colors with hot spots: to make it black, grey and white and then add the red hot color as a device to make the eye go around the image
